GENDER ESSAY

For my ‘Fashion Cultures and History’ module, our brief was to write a 2000 word essay discussing the relationship between fashion and identity. I chose to write about gender, and it’s relationship to both fashion and identity. Gender identity and self expression is heavily influenced by fashion, and my essay explores how the themes intertwine.

FASHION CONSUMPTION + PSYCHOANALYSIS

As part of my CIFR module, exploring critical issues in the fashion industry, I chose to focus on ‘Fashion Consumption and Psychoanalysis’, a secondary module within the CIFR unit. I decided to write a case study on Calvin Klein, in response to the essay question: “How does the fashion industry promote commodities by connecting them to consumers’unconscious desires, ideas, and purposes?”. 

I chose to focus on the theme: ‘Sex Sells: the hyper-sexualisation of women’s bodies in the fashion industry, and its relationship to ‘commodity fetishism’.
